The Old Students Association of Iwo Grammar School, Iwo, Osun State has protested the renaming of the school by the Governor Rauf Aregbesola administration.
The President of the association, Mr. Adunade Amoo, said this at a briefing to herald the 50th anniversary of the school on Wednesday.
The school reclassification initiative embarked on by the current administration has led to the change of names of some schools in the state. The policy inaugurated late last year in the state, however, has attracted divergent comments with some stakeholders welcoming the idea, while others kicked against it.
Amoo, who conveyed the alunmi’s position in the name change, said they were dissatisfied with the state government’s directive.
He, therefore, appealed to the governor to revert to the school’s original name. The institution’s new name is Iwo High School.
Amoo, who, urged the governor to reverse the decision, nonetheless, acknowledged the transformation going on in public schools in the state.
According to him, the government has performed well in transforming the schools but for the renaming initiative.
He added, “The Old Students Association of Iwo Grammar School, Iwo has written a protest letter to the governor to express its displeasure on the change of the school name.
“The name of the school was a cherished legacy for all the old and present students of the school. Iwo Grammar School was founded by the Iwo community and its name is a heritage for all indigenes of the town.”
On the use of hijab in schools, Amoo said pupils of the school were allowed to wear it because it was not a missionary institution.
Lamenting the crisis the issue had generated, he urged all stakeholders to seek a way of resolving it amicably in the interest of the pupils.
He also advised pupils to shun hooliganism and face their studies seriously.
