Zamfara Education Board Raises Concern Over Increased Marriage of Schoolgirls

The Executive Secretary of Zamfara State Female Education Board, Dr. Barira Ibrahim, has expressed concern over the attitude of some parents, who took advantage of the closure of schools to give out their daughters in marriage.

She condemned the act during an interactive session on Inclusion of Life Skills into Schools Plans, organized by UNICEF, on Wednesday in Gusau. Dr. Ibrahim said her office had received complaints and information that some parents in the state were using the COVID-19 induced schools closure to marry out their daughters.

Consequent to this, the board has embarked on an awareness campaign, especially on parents who married off their kids through one-on-one discussions and radio programs to draw the attention of members of the public to the rising act.

According to Ibrahim, the campaign is also meant to sensitize those in the process of being married off, to continue with schooling by agreeing with their prospective husbands to allow them to complete their schools even after the marriage.
