The University of Nigeria Nsukka campus has come under fire after it was revealed that the school awarded the sum of N1,000 and N1,500 as prizes to the best graduating students during the institution's 49th convocation ceremony held on Thursday, June 10.
The ''ridiculous prizes'' were contained in the prizes and award night program booklet obtained by Sahara reporters. In the booklet, the Faculty of Social Sciences; Prof Onigu Otite Prize for the best graduating student in the Department of Sociology/Anthropology, valued at (N1,000), was given to Onwuneme Victory A.
Others are; the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation Prize to the best graduating student in Economics, Value (N1000), Okafor John Chimezie; Chief Enoch Ifediora Oil Prize to the best graduating student in the Department of Geography, Value (N1000) Ukata Nkemakonam; Sir Odumegwu Ojukwu memorial prize to the best final year student in the Faculty of Business Administration, Value (N1500) Nwankwo Esther.
Parents and some of the university workers present at the ceremony described the prizes as a ''show of shame'' while drawing a comparison between the awards and the prizes won by contestants in the Big Brother Nigeria show.
