The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) Student Affairs Department on Saturday, was set ablaze by unidentified hoodlums.
The fire destroyed property worth millions of Naira, including vital documents of students and the university.
An eye witness, who pleaded anonymity, said that the fire which gutted the office of the Dean, Student Affairs of the university, started early in the morning.
"The people who committed the crime used fuel to set the place on fire.
"If not for the quick intervention of fire fighters from Nsukka office of Enugu State Fire Service, the fire could have spread to other buildings close to the student affairs department.
"The fire destroyed computers, documents and other office equipment in the office of the dean of student affairs.
"UNN security has cordoned off the area to bar people from entering the place," the eye witness said
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof Malachy Okweze, confirmed the incident, and said the fire was the handiwork of detractors who were not happy with numerous achievements of Prof Bartho Okolo, the Vice-chancellor.
"It is unfortunate that somebody carried out such an evil act by destroying property of the university,
"The university will do everything to fish out the perpetrators of that evil act.
'The actions of the detractors will not deter the present university administration from continuing with its good work," he said
The Police Public Relations Officer in Enugu State, Mr Ebere Amarizu, also confirmed the incident and said the police had commenced investigation into the matter.
"The police have commenced investigation into the fire incident which gutted UNN student affairs department early Saturday morning.
"Office equipment and vital documents were destroyed but there was no loss of life,' Amarizu said.
