The UNIPORT chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities has called on the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency constitute a governing council in the institution following the dissolution of the former governing council in June 2020. This plea was made during the congress meeting of the union at the university on Tuesday.
According to a statement signed by the ASUU Chairman, Austen Sado, upon the dissolution of the former governing council, a new council must be immediately reconstituted as if it were not dissolved in the first place.
“It is disheartening to observe that the Federal Government has failed to constitute a governing council even though the governing council is the organ responsible for the appointment of a vice chancellor for the university, a process which has been stalled since the dissolution of the council.
“The University Autonomy Act does not support arbitrary dissolution of council, and by the letter and spirit of the law, a vacuum is abhorred. This implies that in the event that the governing council is dissolved, it shall be reconstituted almost immediately as if the governing council was not dissolved in the first place.”
