University of Port HarcourtAlumni Association
Has called on President Goodluck Jonathan and Governor Rotimi Amaechi to embrace peace. The Presidency and Amaechi had been involved in a disagreement that had plunged the Rivers State Peoples Democratic Party into crisis.
But the UNIPORT alumni Association, in a communiqué issued shortly after an emergency meeting in Port Harcourt on Monday, described Jonathan and Amaechi as members of the association and appealed to them to bury the hatchet and embrace an amicable settlement of their political differences.
The communiqué was signed by the National President of the Association, Chief Ike Chinwo, and 10 other national officers.
It read, “That the political impasse between her two distinguished Alumni, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Nigeria and Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, CON, the Executive Governor of Rivers State, should be amicably resolved.
“All external interests should hence forth desist from inflaming the situation further. The unique cord binding these two distinguished unique alumni should never be severed irrespective of the political intrigues.”
The alumni also appealed to its members to intervene in the impasse between the President and the governor in the overall interest of the alumni association in particular and the country in general.
Earlier, the member representing Ikwerre/Emohua Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Chief Andrew Uchendu, expressed surprise that people could rise against Amaechi after the governor had done a lot to develop the state.
Uchendu, who is the Chairman, House Committee on Public Service Matters, challenged Amaechi’s critics to a public debate and advised them to stop portraying themselves as ingrates.
“They should recall that for many years, we have been in political limbo until Amaechi came to the political scene in 1999. He gave (Dr. Peter) Odili every solid support and he moved the people of Ikwerre to give Odili an unparalleled loyalty,” the lawmaker said.
