Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Banku Obi has identified accountability and transparency as hallmarks of her administration, stressing that she would not condone any form of sharp practices.
Prof. Obi stated this when Executive members of the Calabar and District Society of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria [ICAN] paid a courtesy call on her.
According to her, sharp practices are inimical to the growth of any organization, emphasizing that her administration will not treat issues of financial misconduct with kid gloves. she opined that as a professional body, ICAN and its members should strive hard to display a high level of integrity and professionalism in the discharge of their duties, this is even as she promised to collaborate with the disciplinary arm of ICAN to sanction members involved in any form of misconducts.
In her words, ''l don’t expect anyone who is saddled with managing the finances of the university to engage in sharp practices. The Bursary is the life wire of the university and we do not want to see the university shut down because of financial impropriety."
"Remind those of your members that are involved in sharp practices to desist, because as financial managers, they must have to live up to expectation.'' Prof. Florence Obi also restated her commitment towards partnering with ICAN in the Area of training, workshops and seminars for capacity building in order to enhance productivity.
In an earlier remark, the Chairman, ICAN, Calabar District Society, Sir Charley J. Arako, congratulated the Vice-Chancellor on her emergence as the first female and 11th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar since its 45 years of existence.
While informing the Vice-Chancellor that the Institution is a proud recipient of the body's Prestigious Merit Award-in the Corporate Category- bestowed on her earlier in the year, Sir, Arako commended the University for approving Direct Entry Admission for holders of the Accounting Technicians Scheme (ATS) Certificate.
The Chairman noted that by the approval, the number of candidates into the ATS will increase, adding that, the body is hoping for a continued synergy with the University in areas of Manpower Development, Human Capacity Expansion and Professional Development, as well as, Placement of ICAN members in the Institution.
He concluded by enumerating areas the body is seeking cooperation and partnership with the University to include; Members Welfare and Interest, Staffing of Bursary and Internal Audit Departments with ICAN qualified Accountants, Engaging with CDS on training Programmes and Need for Accounting Laboratory for the training of students amongst others.
