The Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) in Bauchi, have disagreed over the pro-efficiency test recommended for primary school teachers.
The state government earlier directed SUBEB to conduct a pro-efficiency test for all primary school teachers in the state in order to assess them.
Chairman of SUBEB in the state, Abdullahi Dabo, who spoke through a permanent commissioner in the board, Alhaji Bappah Magaji, said the test was not meant to retrench or demote any teacher, but to fish out unqualified ones among them.
He expressed dismay over poor performance in senior secondary school examinations, saying unprofessional teachers contribute to students' failure.
Dabo said plans have been completed by the state government to post out unqualified teachers to local government councils.
But the Nigerian Union of Teachers yesterday dispersed teachers who gathered for the pro-efficiency test at the Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic, Bauchi.
A statement signed by the secretary of NUT in the state, Comrade Musa Ali, said at the end of the union's meeting, they decided that teachers will not attend any verification exercise by SUBEB, and therefore asked their members to stay away.
He said the union will take action against any teacher who fails to abide by the directive.
