Bowen Varsity Riot: Students Destroyed Properties Worth N30M – VC

Authorities of Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State, have estimated property destroyed by protesting students at over N30 million, just as they assured parents that only identified culprits of the disturbances would be penalized.

The vice chancellor of the university, Professor Mathews Ojo, told Saturday Tribune on Friday that a comprehensive review of the disturbances and their circumstances had been directed with the institution’s disciplinary committee already working on the situation.

He gave the assurance that innocent students would not suffer any injustice, just as he assured parents that the university was committed to the welfare of their children.

The vice chancellor confirmed that the university would re-open on April 1, but denied reports that the authorities were closing the halls of residence against students during daytime.

He added that identified culprits would be given the opportunity to defend themselves, assuring parents that the bad eggs behind the crisis would be weeded out.

On electricity problem in the institution, Professor Ojo said, “Iwo township has been without electricity for the past 11 days. We have since then been running the institution on generator.”

Acting head of the university’s chaplain, Reverend (Mrs) Janet Oluwoye, described the incident as unprecedented, saying the situation was a challenge the institution and the parents should work together to address.
