Biography of Rema

Divine Ikubor, better known as Rema, is a Nigerian Trap, Afrobeat, and Hip-hop singer and composer. In the year 2000, he was born into a Christian household of Mr. (late) and Mrs. Ikubor in Benin City, Southern Nigeria. The 21-year-old Nigerian Afrobeat musician grew up in Benin City with his parents, where he also completed his elementary and secondary school.

Rema’s school days as an aspiring artist saw him play as part of a music ensemble in bars, events, and other locations that may have aided his breakthrough. In 2019, D’Prince saw his ability and signed him to a recording contract with Jonzing World, a subsidiary of Mavin Records owned by Don Jazzy.

Rema returned the favour by releasing his debut EP “Rema” that same year. The EP lost no time in claiming the top place on Apple Music Nigeria. Divine Ikubor rose to fame with the release of “Iron Man,” which was placed on Barack Obama’s 2019 summer playlist.

His Personal Life

As at the time this article was written, we cannot tell if Rema has a girlfriend or not. He has been able to keep his private life under lock and key so far. But one thing we know for sure is that the 21year old artist is unmarried and he is focusing on his career for the time being. You can get more info about Rema via his IG account at @heisrema

How Old is Rema?

Rema was born on May 1st, 2000 and he completed 23 years of age on the 1st of May, 2024. He was greeted by fans all over the world.

Rema’s Girlfriend

Rema is one of the hottest music stars right now. He has been phenomenon in all he does musically. Just like Ayra Starr, Rema is also rumored to be in a relationship with his musical colleague and label mate, Ayra Starr as well as Selena Gomez who he did a remix of his hit song Calm down. Rema has come out to debunk the rumors and claims he has nothing but great friendship and love for both.

The Death of Rema’s Father and His Family

As one would expect, a lot is not known about Rema’s Dad and his siblings but this is what we know so far about his Dad. Rema had lost both his father and his elder brother before his climb to popularity.

Rema came back from Ghana at the age of 17 and bought his mother a 2010 Lexus Rx 350. Rema claimed to have made a living by working on a beach in Ghana.

Rema had this to say regarding his father and brother’s deaths: “At some point, things became difficult, and I had to be brave… I had to work extra hard since I had lost both my brother and my father… I had to put forth a lot of effort.”

Following the death of his father, Justice Ikubor, Rema lashed out against the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). In his tweet, he insinuated that there was something sinister about the death of his father in the hotel room where he was found.

Let’s talk about his musical career.

Rema’s Music Career

Rema grew up in Benin City surrounded by music, and he began rapping in a local church called Christ of Mercy, where he was a youth wing leader. He established a rapping lesson called “Rhyme Nation” in his local church, where he taught young people how to rap. He also went to schools to train other rappers, but when he was 11 years old, he shifted to secular music.

The tragedy that befell his family after his brother and father died within seven years of each other led his family to migrate to Ghana.

Rema formed the music group RNA with a buddy, Prince Solomon Eromosele nicknamed Alpha P, in 2013. The acronym RNA is derived from the initials of both artists.

After winning the Second season of Pikolo’s Dream Alive talent contest, RNA by Rema and Alpha P got a record deal with Peak Entertainment and released their debut single “Mercy” a mid-tempo single made at Dream Alive Studio in Benin City. Whyte House Pictures directed Mercy’s music video.

Rema was still in school when he formed his music group RNA, and not long after, he was noticed by D’Prince, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Jonzing World Record.  It was after he did a freestyle of D’Prince’s song “Gucci Gang”, that he (D’prince) picked interest in him. D’prince is also the younger brother of Don Jazzy, the CEO of Mavin Records and a Nigerian music business tycoon and producer.
