A student of the University of Port Harcourt, UNIPORT, has shared his encounter with some bribe-seeking police officers attached to the E-Crack Unit of the Rivers State Police Command.
The student who identified himself as Victor E. said he was extorted of N150,000 on February 16, 2021, around Rumualogu-Alakahia Car Wash axis of Obio-Akpor Local government area, when he went out with two of his friends to get food for his sick girlfriend.
He alleged that he was stopped by the police officers who then proceeded to search his vehicle. His phone and that of his friends were subsequently seized by the policemen, who then threatened to take them to the office of the EFCC or butcher them should they refuse their monetary demands.
He was forced to go to an ATM machine where they made him withdraw N120,000 and an additional transfer of N30, 000 was made to an account belonging to one Udoh Favour, provided by the E-Crack Officers.
Victor, however, said luck ran out of the policemen as one of them forgot his phone in his car.
The spokesperson for Rivers Police Command, Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the story, saying the ownership of the phone was traced to a police officer in the Command (names withheld), and all the officers involved in the extortion have been arrested and would be made to pay back the money extorted from the student and face the law.
