Pearson Introduces Mentoring For Secondary School Teachers

Pearson Nigeria says it has trained 180 English, Mathematics and science teachers in Lagos State.

Twenty-five of the teachers, the firm added, were also trained as master mentors.

The Pearson Nigeria MD, Mr. Muhtar Bakare stated this in Lagos.

He said, “The initiative, based on international best practices and led by highly experienced international trainers, is designed to enhance teachers’ capabilities, with a view to improving learning outcomes in schools.

“It will also improve teachers’ performance, competence and confidence as well as foster collaboration among them.

“We are offering high quality professional development and coaching in line with international practice to teachers. This is to enhance their mentoring capabilities because the best way to teach is through mentoring.”

Meanwhile, the Director-General, National Teachers Institute, Dr. Aminu Sharehu, on Thursday urged teachers of Mathematics and other science subjects to adopt simplified methods of teaching the subjects to avoid mass failure.

He made the call in Kaduna during a stakeholders meeting organised by the institute’s centre for the Strengthening of Mathematics and Science Education, NAN reported.

Sharehu said the institute had trained 413 Mathematics and science teachers on new methods of teaching the subjects, adding that they would serve as master trainers in their respective states.

He said, “SMASE training programme now constitute the single biggest in-service training for primary school science teachers in Nigeria.”
