Albeit of Kwara descent, Salami was born in Lagos State where he had both primary and education . He began his acting career in 1964, with a gaggle called Young Concert Party, under the leadership of Ojo Ladipo, popularly referred to as Baba Mero. After a couple of years, the group changed its name to Ojo Ladipo Theatre Group, and later metamorphosed into Awada Kerikeri Theatre Group.

Following the demise of Ojo Ladipo in 1978, Salami became her sucessor in the leadership of the group, which brought him popularity. He featured within the first Yoruba film, Ajani Ogun, during which the late Adeyemi Afolayan, the daddy of Kunle Afolayan and Gabriel Afolayan, plays the lead role.
He also featured during a movie titled Kadara by Adeyemi Afolayan (Ade love). He later featured within the popular Nigerian comedy series Comedy half hour with the pseudonym Oga Bello. He produced his first movie, Ogun Ajaye, in 1985, from the stable of Awada Kerikeri. Since 1985, he has produced, directed and featured in several Yoruba movies. He was a pioneer member of the Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners, and also served as president of the association.

Your wife said you became friends from primary school?
Yes, we were friends right from grade school . Our costume was “pinafore and she or he had ways of rocking hers. That was how I noticed her. So I always give her punishment whenever she does anything wrong. often times i tell her, “you will wash the rest room.
Then later, she would buy me meat-pie from Kingsway, rice from Iya Congo which was how we became friends. We got so close during our grade school days but there was no emotional attachment.
At what point did you become very close?
That was 1966. We love one another such a lot that we got married in 1975. I grew up with my Uncle. So at one point, she wasn’t proud of what i used to be browsing . But I told her to not be bothered. My Uncle was a disciplinarian. I had 2 stepmothers. One sells rice while the other one sells beans cake. i will be able to awaken early to scrub rice to cook while i’ll wash beans for my 2nd stepmother. If my 2nd step mum didn’t finish selling her moimoi, i will be able to hawk the remaining (laughs). I also sold rice too. I also fetched water later in the evening.
This was the purpose my wife and that i became so close. She always joined me within the evening. she is going to help me fetch water and carry it closer to my house and that i will take it in.
Despite your young age, how were you ready to keep it under wrap?
As I said, once we started, we didn’t realize it was love. There was no attachment in the least . Don’t also forget that once we were much younger, you dare not allow your parents know that you simply are crazy with any girl or boy. So what we did then was whenever we would like to ascertain one another , i will be able to ride my bicycle and whistle. She understands whenever she hears me and always runs bent see me. There was no mobile yet we were ready to see one another whenever we so wished. Many were always surprised that we all know the way to give one another signals despite how young we were.
