NECO Provides Alternative Venues for Closed Unity Schools:

The National Examinations Council (NECO), on Sunday, said it would provide alternative venues for students of closed Federal Unity Colleges that registered for its exams.

The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of NECO, Prof. Promise Okpala, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

NAN recalls that some Federal Unity Colleges in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states under emergency rule were closed down after an attack on students by insurgents last month.

Okpala said that the provision of alternative venues was in line with the council’s pursuit of effective security arrangements to safeguard the lives of candidates and staff.

According to him, the affected students will retain their examination numbers and the names of their schools, saying the only change is just the venue.

He noted that the examination venues would be provided with adequate security as strict measures had been put in place by the council to ensure hitch-free examinations in all centres nationwide.

On the recently released Nov./Dec. 2013 SSCE results by NECO, where less than one per cent malpractice was recorded, the registrar described it as “an eloquent testimony of the painstaking efforts the council consistently made to eradicate examination malpractice.

“It is important to note that there have been improvements in NECO results over the past three years,” Okpala said. (NAN)`
