NASU Supports Sack of UNIOSUN VC

Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU, Osun State University, UNIOSUN applaud the recommendation of the Governing Council of the university for the sacking of the Vice-Chancellor.

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions at the Osun State University, Osogbo, has described the recommendation of the Governing Council of the university for the sacking of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bashir, Okesina, and some other officers of the institution as a step in the right direction.

The NASU Chairman, Mr. Isaiah Fayemi; secretary, Suleman Olugbeja; and the treasurer, Mrs. Fisayo Ojeleke, signed the statement on behalf of the union.

Warning the governor against taking a contrary decision to that of the governing council on the matter, NASU said any contrary decision would amount to subversion of justice.

NASU further averred that industrial harmony in the institution may be negatively affected, should the government attempt to override the decision of the governing council.

The statement reads: “It is established that council has acted within the ambit of the Osun State University (Establishment) Law of 2006, taking into consideration items 1, a, b and c (Removal and Discipline of Academic and Administrative Staff) page 27 of the law.

“Contrary to the opinion in some quarters, the university’s Governing Council has equally acted within the ambit of the Osun State University (Establishment) Law of 2006 taking into consideration item 3 (1), page 44 of the law which says: The vice chancellor shall be appointed or be removed by the Visitor upon consultation with the council, hence the Governing Council’s recommendation to the Visitor in respect of the vice chancellor is in tandem with the university law.”

This was however contrary to the position of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, who condemned the governing council headed by Prof. Gabriel Olawoyin, SAN, for recommending to the Visitor to the university, Governor Rauf Aregbesola that the vice chancellor be sacked.

According to ASUU, the recommendation of the council is prejudicial because the Visitor to the university, Governor Rauf Aregbesola, has constituted a Visitation Panel to investigate the crisis rocking the institution.

The ASUU Chairman, Dr. Oluseye Abiona, said the council ought to have exercised restraint because the panel had submitted its report to the governor who had the final say on the matter.
