Over two thousand teachers sacked in December last year by the Kwara state government, stormed the governor’s office in Ilorin, on Thursday, February 11 to protest against the recruitment of new teachers to fill their positions.
The protesting teachers were employed in the last weeks of the administration of former governor Abdulfatah Ahmed in 2019, and according to the Ministry of Education, the teachers were laid off because their recruitment did not follow due process.
It also said an investigation conducted by the state government with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) found out over 600 of the teachers were not qualified to teach.
The decision to replace the teachers was highly criticized by labour leaders and opposition politicians, with the Kwara state chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress saying the sack would negatively affect the workers, their families, and dependants.
