The Kano State Police Command has arrested a school teacher, Ma’aruf Muhammad, 24, over the brutalization of an 8-year-old Almajiri boy, Muhammad Garba. The teacher was arrested after the brutalized child was found roaming around a culvert near Kofar Mata Quarters, Kano.
The spokesman of the Kano Police Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, who confirmed the incident in a statement said the grandmother and father of the child, were also arrested.
According to the police, they received a report from the Managing Director, Kano State Agency for Evacuation and Repatriation of Beggars that, on the 28 of March 2022 about a child beggar with cane marks all over his body roaming the streets. The child was eventually rushed to the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital Kano, where he was treated and discharged.
Upon investigation, the child revealed that he escaped from Nguru, Yobe State, to Kano State by train as a result of severe beatings by his teacher at an "Almajiri School". On his part, the teacher confessed to the crime, stating that he uses a USB Cable wire to beat the victim on several occasions after removing his shirt. He added that the child was brought to him by the grandmother of the child.
