Official JAMB 2017 Cut-off Marks For All Institutions Announced

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has set  the official 2017 cut-off marks for universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and innovative enterprising institutes.

This was part of the decisions taken at the 2017 Policy meeting attended by Vice Chancellors, Rectors and other stake holders.

The minimum cut off marks for admissions into universities is 120 while the minimum cut-off marks for polytechnics and colleges of education was set at 100 and that of innovative enterprising institutes was fixed at 110.

The JAMB Registrar however stated that institutions are at liberty to raise their cut-off marks above the minimum cut-off marks set by JAMB but should not go below the cut-off marks.

It was also decided that the deadline for 2017 admission into public universities and other degree awarding public institutions will end on January 15, 2018 while for private universities will end on January 31, 2018.

Also, admission decisions on first choice candidates by universities will end on October 15, and second choice candidates will end on December 15; after which the remaining students will be available in the market place for other institutions till the January closing dates.

The Registrar of JAMB, Ishaq Oloyede, further stated that Central Admission Processing System, CAPS, will be used to organize the admission processes among institutions, as this will help deal with the challenges posed by the former method.

He said that Institutions can use the dual mode system which involves both manual and the newly introduced CAPS and called for a dynamic educational policy as related to admissions.

“All over the world, there is agitation for dynamic educational policy,” he said. “JAMB only admits for National Diploma, not Higher National Diploma; so why should we use the same requirement for ND and BSC, that is unreasonable parity.”

“We should not be sentimental in fixing our cut off mark; we need not over-dramatise issue of cut off mark.” He said

He finally stated that  since admission process will now be automated, JAMB Registrar must approve all candidates for admission. This will help curb illegal admission.

On his part, the Minister of Education said that the cancellation of Post- UTME was a mistake.

He noted that banning of post-UTME led to a lot of irregularities by candidates and some institutions.

The minister explained that with the lifting of the ban on the conduct of the examination, institutions are now at liberty to conduct, but advised that the fee should not exceed N2000.
