FUTA students protest the death of their colleague

Students of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), on Tuesday, took to the street to protest the death of a 200 level student of the institution, Daniel Akinyele, who died from injuries sustained in an auto accident on Monday night.

The angry students were seen in front of the school gate with placards condemning the way the School health department handle the situation

The students, however, converged on the Akure /Ilesha road on Tuesday morning, protesting his death, barricading the road, hindering vehicular movement for several hours.

The students also prevent people from entering and coming out of the campus lamenting that the death of the student was avoidable and laid the blame at the doorsteps of the institution’s management.

if the security guards at the gate had allowed the victim to be rushed in on time and promptly attended to, at the FUTA health centre, the deceased might survive the auto crash.

In a statement released on the school Official Facebook page signed by the school’s Registrar, Mr Richard Arifalo, the school said: “from available information, the deceased student along with others were involved in an accident outside the campus around 10 PM on August 2, 2021.

“They were first taken to a private hospital where doctors battled to save their lives. Three of the students were stabilised but Daniel’s condition remained critical. When the condition of the student deteriorated the doctor at the Private Hospital referred him to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo for expert intervention.

“At that time the parents of the student and some relations had joined him at the Private Hospital and it was decided, because of the time factor, to bring him to the University Health Centre.
