Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige has disclosed that the registration of Congress of University Academics (CONUA), a rival union to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commenced.
He said this while receiving a delegation of CONUA leadership led by the union's National Coordinator, Niyi Sunmonu on Thursday, November 19 in Abuja.
Ngige commended the union for initiating the process to apply for the registration, assuring them that a committee responsible for the consideration of its registration request has been set up and will submit its report to the ministry in four weeks.
Speaking earlier, CONUA Coordinator, Niyi Summonu, urged the minister to use his good office to ensure the registration of the association as an independent academic union. He added that the new body believes that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) does not represent their interest, and its mode of operation is not in line with what they believe in.
