The Federal Medical Centre, Ebute Metta, Lagos state, has been accused of alleged negligence in the death of an undergraduate student of the University of Lagos named, Samuel Omolaye, following his death at their facility.
25-year-old Samuel reportedly lost his life after complaining about not feeling well and his family members rushed him to the medical facility for urgent treatment on February 1, 2023, where he was allegedly kept waiting for three hours due to a lack of bed space.
When he was eventually attended to, the doctor discovered that he had a shortage of blood, and instructed his mother, Mrs. Comfort to get blood, after which he left them. The deceased mother added that the student kept lamenting about the weakness he was experiencing and when she complained to a nurse, she was told that the doctor did not record in the system that Samuel needed blood.
Comfort said another doctor who was later assigned to her son, did not take Samule's blood sample until late at night, and when she went to get the blood, she was told they had closed for the night and after pleading with the hospital staff, she was allowed to make a payment but had to wait for several hours for the payment to be confirmed.
The aggrieved mother said by the time she returned to the ward, the blood transfusion was yet to commence, and when she asked why she was told that they needed to warm the blood. While they were warming the blood, Samuel, unfortunately, gave up the ghost.
