Ex-UI Lecturer To Return N.5m

A retired lecturer at the University of Ibadan, Mrs. AnuOlowa Iyanu, has promised to return N487, 901. 91 mistakenly paid into her account by the university authorities.

The payment of the sum, she said, took place after she had resigned from the university.

A statement by the institution’s Media Officer, Sunday Saanu, on Monday, said Iyanu, who taught in the Computer and Electrical/ Electronics departments between 1995 and 1999, conveyed her intention to return the money in a letter to the university.

In the letter addressed to the university’s Deputy Bursar, Michael Alatishe, the retired teacher said, “I discovered N487,901.91 in my account, which I am planning to return to the university. I am now retired and away from the country; I will make necessary arrangements toreturn the money to the university.”

Reacting, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Adewole, described the retired teacher as an honest person whose action deserve demulation.

Iyanu’s honesty, the Vice-Chancellor said, was rare, pointing out that she could have spent the money, especially as she had retired from the university.

Urging youths to shun greed and to emulate the former lecturer’s sincerity, Adewole noted that good name was better than riches.
