Edo govt retires two principals over school riot

The Edo State Government has directed the retirement of two Permanent Secretaries in the Ministry of Education and Post-Primary Education Board as well as the principals of Idogbo Junior and Senior Secondary School following the student rampage that occurred in December 3, 2021.

The State Commissioner of Education for Communication and Orientation, Andrew Emwanta, who issued a statement to this effect said the decision was reached during an Executive Council meeting chaired by the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, at the Government House, Benin City, on Wednesday, 12 January.

The statement also added that the government had set up a committee headed by the deputy governor to investigate the rampage, after its findings and extensive deliberations, the Executive council adopted a motion to retire the civil servants.

On December 3rd, 2021, the school had experienced a riot that led to attacks on the school principals and teachers as well as the destruction of the school’s property. Though reasons for the rampage were not given, the school was eventually shut indefinitely by the government.
