Court Orders Bayero Varsity to Reinstate Expelled Billionaire’s Daughter :

The Federal High Court sitting in Kano, presided over by Justice Fatun Riman, has ordered Bayero University Kano to reinstate Hafsat Dahiru Mangal as a bona fide undergraduate of the university. The court also held that her expulsion from the University for the Alleged Examination Malpractices was null and void.

Hafsat, daughter of the billionaire Alhaji Dahiru Mangal, owner of MaxAir airline, was expelled from Bayero University, Kano, on the January 14, 2011 for the alleged offence of examination malpractices. She was at the time of expulsion a level three student of the English department.

Approaching the court for redress, the plaintiff joined Bayero University Kano, University’s Council, vice chancellor and registrar of the university as defendants in the civil suit with the registration number FHC/K/SC/40/2011.

To prove her case, Hafsat testified in person as PW1, while the defendants through their counsel, Barrister Francis Ithunokia, called two witnesses.

In her evidence-in-chief, the plaintiff denied the allegation of examination malpractices levied against her by the defendants as well as the handwriting in the booklet confiscated. She also denied being the person caught with the booklet.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Fatun Riman, in view of the evidence and authorities adduced by both parties during the proceedings, held that Hafsat Mangal was not accorded fair hearing before she was expelled from the University.

He therefore entered the judgment in favour of the plaintiff.

The court also ordered Bayero University Kano and other defendants in the suit to re-instate Hafsat Mangal to continue with her studies as an undergraduate student of English, without any loss of rights and privileges. (Leadership)
