Members of the House of Representatives are set to pass a bill for the establishment of a Federal College of Education, in Bende, Abia State. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Benjamin Kalu (APC-Abia) was first introduced on Wednesday, June 10, 2020.
The bill seeks to provide full-time courses, training in technology, applied sciences, commerce, social sciences, arts and humanities, among others and has passed the second reading stage in the house.
The lawmaker said Bende Local Government Area was chosen for the location of the school as it the oldest and largest Local Government Area in the South-East geo-political zone. According to Kalu, despite the growing population and landmass, there is no tertiary institution operated either by the Federal or State Government in the Federal Constituency.
In his ruling, the Speaker of the house, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila referred the bill to House Committee on Tertiary Education for further legislative actions
