ASUU: Buhari issues two weeks ultimatum to end strike, Ngige to step down from negotiations

The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu has been directed by President Muhammadu Buhari to resolve the lingering strike embarked upon by the four university-based unions and report back to him in two weeks' time.

The President who gave the directive on Tuesday, July 19, after he received briefings from the relevant government Ministries, Agencies, and Departments involved in resolving the face-off with the university unions, also directed the minister of labour and employment, Chris Ngige to step aside as head of the FG negotiations while the education minister steps in.

Buhari further directed that while the education minister heads the negotiations, Ngige is to be present in all the meetings to resolve the crisis alongside the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Mr. Boss Mustapha.

Responding to the new ultimatum, the president of ASUU, Emmanuel Osadoke during a television interview said the ultimatum will not make any difference because it isn't the first time the president would be saying such. He noted that despite all the committees that have been set up to oversee the negotiations, none has been fruitful, and if the government was really serious about ending the strike, it wouldn't take them more than two days to resolve the strike if the children of politicians attended Nigerian public universities.
