Many times, candidates are in the habits of ignoring the importance of having the right subject combination and O’level admission requirements for studying Economics in any Federal state or private university of polytechnic in Nigeria. Making use of the right O’Level subject requirements plus JAMB subjects combination makes the admission process much easier for candidates.
Do you know that one of the major reason for the increase in purchase of change of university and institution form is because candidates make the wrong choice of subject combinations for their selected courses?
In this post today, we shall be giving candidates full details as regards the WAEC and NECO otherwise known as O’Level subjects combination for Economics in summary, the admission requirements for studying Economics. Economics is a course many students upon graduating from secondary school aspire to study but this is one course that comes with a totally different O’Level subject requirements.
Many would assume that one of the subjects required for studying Economics in universities or polytechnic would include Economics which is a major subject but the case is different for Economics both for JAMB and the university or polytechnic’s subject requirements.
Also, in the quest to study Economics, most candidates look out for the best institution to study this course. Say for example, UNILAG, UNIBEN and UNN, UI and the likes are good for studying Engineering courses. It is believed that graduates from these schools are well tutored and stand out among the crowd though this not a fact yet.
Same goes with best universities for studying Economics, most people believe that University of Benin (UNIBEN), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), University of Jos (UNIJOS), University of Lagos (UNILAG), University of Nigeria (UNN), University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) are regarded as the best schools in Nigeria for studying Economics.
In as much as this might not be completely true, these schools have been able to carve a niche for themselves in this field till date by constantly churning out some of the best Economics graduates we have in Nigeria till date.
Now lets go through the admission requirements for Economics before discussing about the O’level (NECO/WAEC) and JAMB approved subjects combination.
WAEC and NECO Admission Requirements For Studying Economics
Studying Economics as the case may present itself requires that candidate posses the following:
a) Must have obtained a minimum of 5 O’level credits in Mathematics, English Language, Economics and any 2 other O’level subjects, preferable, 1 science and one non science subjects. (Government, Geography, or Biology, Agricultural science)
Please note that Commerce as a subject for candidates is not a major requirement, it can take the place of Government or Geography.
b) As part of the requirements for studying Economics, your JAMB cut off mark has a major role to play in ensuring you gain admission, It is advised that candidates score up to 250 minimum JAMB cut off mark and above to stand a chance of studying Economics because it is a very competitive course under management or social science faculty.
c) Your post UTME aggregate score is also the final decision maker. A good post UTME aggregate score is made of both JAMB and post UTME results and some times WAEC or NECO results. A good post UTME aggregate score will then determine if you passed the departmental cut off mark for economics in your preferred choice of institution.
In the above, we have listed the three major admission requirements and correct O’level subjects combination for studying Economics in any private, state or Federal university in Nigeria.
The required JAMB and O’Level subjects combination for Economics cannot be overemphasized as is also a key metric in determining whether a candidate is eligible to register Economics or not during the UTME registration exercise.
Below are the approved JAMB/UTME subjects candidates must write in JAMB in order to study Economics as a course in any University or polytechnic in Nigeria.
