18-year-old student killed as smugglers and security operatives clash in Badagry

One Alade Oba, an 18-year-old SS3 student of Kankon Secondary School, has been killed in a clash between security operatives of the Joint Border Patrol Team (JBPT) comprising Customs, Army, and Immigration and suspected rice smugglers at Irosu village near Badagry.

The student was hit by a stray bullet and said to have died on the spot during the clash that happened on Saturday, June 19.

According to reports, the JBPT were on a routine patrol at the Irosu community near Sawa checkpoint around the Owode-Apa border post in search of smuggled foreign rice, following a tip-off. They were, however, confronted by some angry youths who demanded that security operatives were not allowed in the community.

The student was caught up in the crossfire as he was hit by a stray bullet shot by the security operatives who were shooting sporadically in the air. This led to a massive protest by the youths who mobilized and burn tyres, demanding the release of Alade’s corpse.

The deceased corpse was eventually released to the family for burial while soldiers were deployed to maintain peace in the area.
