As a measure aimed at tackling gender inequality, a law making it illegal for schools to expel pregnant schoolgirls has been passed in Zimbabwe.
The announcement was made after a legal amendment last week, that seeks to reinforce a 1999 guideline that was rarely implemented in the country.
The Zimbabwean government made the big move after increased cases of sexual abuse and unwanted pregnancies arising from prolonged closure of schools due to the coronavirus pandemic. The new law is aimed at, encouraging in-class activities and discouraging many girls from dropping out of school after getting pregnant.
The country's education minister Cain Mathema, charged schools, parents, and guardians to assist the country in fulfilling the access to education right for all children by providing the necessary support and assistance needed to the children.
