VC Urges Nigeria’s Varsities to Rely Less on Govt for Funding:

The Vice-Chancellor, Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Ogun State, Prof. Oluyemisi Obilade, has urged the nation’s universities to rely less on government funding by introducing projects that will increase their internally generated revenue.
Obilade, while speaking with journalists on the institution’s activities, said any education without entrepreneurial bent was no longer relevant in the scheme of things.
She said, “Education is no longer about just obtaining a certificate. Students, in addition to getting certificates, must be taught practical entrepreneurial skills that will make them be on their own after graduation.”

To this end, she said the institution had set the pace by investing in animal husbandry and palm oil plantation.
According to her, the university has commenced animal husbandry project at Imaka, with 100 cows on a 50 hectares of land donated to the institution by the natives.
She said, “Also on this land, we will be rearing chickens, I mean layers and broilers. We will also have a rabbitry. We already have fish ponds.”
Obilade, who said the institution’s palm oil plantation at Okelamuren was already producing palm oil in commercial quantity, added that students of the university who work on any of the farms would earn some allowances.
She stated, “We will pay such students per hour for their efforts. We have the human capacity. It will help students that have financial challenge.
“The students themselves can buy eggs and sell and other farm produce.” (Punch)
