UNIZIK students protest against hike in school fees, others

Protesting students of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, (UNIZIK) were seen carrying placards with various inscriptions to air their displeasure at the decision of the university's management to increase school fees. The placard had inscriptions such as; ''Say no to school fees hike’, and ‘Reduce Unizik School Fees #My papa no dey pluck money from tree''.

According to one of the students who spoke to the press, the tuition was increased from N20,100 to N56,700, while first-year students are made to pay fees ranging from N97,000 to N105,000; excluding acceptance fees of N48,000, G.S of N17,000, departmental and faculty dues, among others.

The student lamented that the increment has made it almost impossible for most of them to continue with school, and they are at the edge of dropping out.

The students embarked on the protest following a disclaimer issued by the university management on Saturday, July 10th, calling the purported increment a ''rumour''.
