UNIUYO CRISES: Student Leaders Pays Last Respect to #NANS Five

Student leaders at the Obafemi Awolowo University campus on Wednesday 19th June, 2013 gave a minute silence to the five comrades of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) who lost their lives recently in a ghastly motor accident while on their way to University of Uyo for a peace mission after four students of the institution were shot dead by men of the Nigerian Police.

A candlelight procession followed immediately at the university's school gate and tributes were paid by notable comrades and students of the university.

The President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Com. Yinka Gbadebo who is also a student of Obafemi Awolowo University was unavoidable absent but he was duly represented by the Secretary General of the Association, Com. Momodu Daniel Godson a part three(3) student of political science Obafemi Awolowo University ile-ife.

Those present at the event are: Com. Momodu Daniel, NANS Secretary General; Samuel Adegbola, the immediate past President of the ACJ, OAU; Ojekunle Alex-Aderemi, the President of the Association of Campus Journalists, OAU; Ayo Shedrach, the Chairman OAU Students' Union Transition Committee.

Others are: Com. Sheyi Babaeko, Com. Akuma, Com. Tunde Badmus, Com. Oladapo Jamal, Com. Omisakin Oluwatobi, among several others.

Earlier, the Secretary General of NANS and some stakeholders of the association met with the National Coordinator of the Education Rights Campaign, Taiwo Hassan to discuss issues relating to students welfarism across the country and the organization posited that a national congress of Nigerian students be called to tackle the menace of police brutality of students in tertiary institutions in the country.

The secretary general of NANS concluded by saying: “It is our collective loss and it is on this note that we call on all Nigerian students, especially the students of University of Uyo to always remember the martyrs who lost their lives for the interest of the students every June 13th.

We also plead with the Federal Government to immortalize the late Senate President of the association and other late comrades with a national monument which would at least make their impact known by generations to come. They died for national interest!

We also urge the federal government to ensure that it compensates the families of the late comrade because their death is irreparable. He was a hero of the students, the oppressed and his life was exemplary”, Com. Momodu said.
