UNIUYO Appoints New Registrar: Educational Background And Career Path Till Date

The 9th Governing Council of the University of Uyo, led by its Chairman, Barr. Bernadette Nwachukwu, has announced the appointment of Mrs. Blossom Ebere Okorie as the 8th substantive Registrar. The decision was made during the 99th meeting of the council held on April 28, 2023. Prior to her appointment, Mrs. Okorie served as the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations of the University.

Born on July 22, 1965, in Kano State, Mrs. Okorie hails from Ikot Umiang Ede, Etinan Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State. She attended Presbyterian Primary School, Enwe Street, Uyo, and completed her Primary Six education at Group School, Ikot Ibok/Ikot Nte, Etinan, where she obtained her First School Leaving Certificate in 1978. She went on to Adiaha Obong Secondary Commercial School Offot, Uyo, for her secondary education, and obtained her General Certificate of Education (GCE) in 1983.

In her quest for further education, Mrs. Okorie enrolled in the defunct University of Cross River State and obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) degree in 1988. She then completed her one-year mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme in 1989. Later, she pursued a Postgraduate Diploma in Education in 2001, and a Masters of Arts in English in 2007.

Mrs. Okorie began her career as Mistress II in Community Comprehensive Secondary School, Four Towns, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State in 1994, and later transferred her service to the University of Uyo in 2000. With her commitment and unbroken loyalty to the University of Uyo, she climbed the ladder of the administrative cadre and held several sensitive positions. She served as Assistant Registrar and Faculty Officer in the Faculty of Pharmacy between 2000-2005, Senior Assistant Registrar and Faculty Officer in the Faculty of Agriculture between 2005-2009, and Senior Assistant Registrar and Faculty Officer in the Faculty of Arts between 2009-2011.

From 2011 to 2015, Mrs. Okorie served as the Principal Assistant Registrar and Head of Academic Staff Establishment, Directorate of Human Resources, and from 2015 to 2018, she was the Deputy Registrar and Secretary, College of Health Sciences. Before her appointment as the Registrar, she was the Deputy Registrar and Head of Unit, Directorate of Information and Public Relations.

Mrs. Okorie is a dedicated and experienced administrator who has served as Secretary, Member, and Chairperson in several Committees and Panels of the University. She has also attended various professional conferences/workshops within the University and Nigeria. She is a member of professional bodies, such as the Association of Nigerian Universities Professional Administrators (ANUPA), the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM), Chartered, and a Fellow of the Institute of Cooperate Administration.

The new Registrar is known for her amiable personality, committed leadership, loyalty, God-fearing nature, humility, and dependability. She has received numerous awards of excellence from different organizations and has rendered community service and special service to the University of Uyo. Mrs. Okorie advocates for peaceful coexistence for maximum productivity.

Mrs. Blossom Ebere Okorie is happily married to Dr. Ebere James Okorie, and they have loving children and grandchildren. She is expected to assume duty on May 1, 2023.
