The Counselling and Human Development Centre (CHDEC) at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) was inaugurated on 30th November 2021. This establishment serves to align the university with its peers, conforming to the guidelines for counselling centres as dictated by the National Universities Commission (NUC). The Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) and Master of Science (M.Sc.) programmes in Counselling Psychology have received the seal of approval from the Senate of the university.
Objectives: Building a Dynamic Counselling Career
The CHDEC aspires to be more than just an academic institution; it is a centre for career and mental health development. The facility is designed to assist graduate students in navigating various opportunities and acquiring critical skills for impactful contributions in their chosen specialisations. Contrary to providing just a general knowledge base, the centre’s main focus is to endow students with pragmatic skills and professional expertise that keep them relevant in the ever-evolving field of counselling.

Array of PGD and MSc Degree Programmes
Applicants may enrol for either the Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) or the Master of Science (M.Sc.) programmes in Counselling Psychology. The latter offers specialisations in the following sectors:
- School Counselling
- Marital, Couple, and Family Counselling
- Child and Adolescent Counselling
- Addiction and Rehabilitation Counselling
- Clinical and Mental Health Counselling
- Gerontological and Grief Counselling

Admission Criteria: Who is Eligible?
PGD Admission Requirements
Candidates holding a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university with a minimum of a Third Class Honours, or possessing an Upper Credit in a Higher National Diploma (HND) from a recognized polytechnic in Social Science, Education, or any related field, are eligible for the Post Graduate Diploma (PGD).
MSc Admission Requirements
Prospective students for the Master’s programme must possess either a B.Sc. or B.Ed degree in Social Sciences, Education, or related disciplines with at least a Second Class Lower division. Alternatively, a Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Social Work, Management, Social Sciences, or Education (PGDE) from a recognised university will suffice.

Programme Structure: Flexibility and Duration

The curriculum is devised to offer a blend of onsite modules and real-time video conferencing, presenting students with optimal flexibility regarding their study schedules.
Programme Duration
Full-time students are expected to complete the course within 12 to 24 calendar months. For those opting for part-time, the course extends from a minimum of 18 to a maximum of 36 calendar months, inclusive of all modules and individual research projects.

Application forms are available at the CHDEC office, situated on the ground floor of the Central Instrument Laboratory Building near the Procurement Office and adjacent to the Uniport Bottling Company, Abuja Campus. A non-refundable application fee of Twenty-five Thousand Naira is required, payable to the CHDEC account (1100256678) at U & C Microfinance Bank Ltd, University of Port Harcourt.
