UNIPORT applications for admission into graduate programmes, 2022/2023

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into the following Programmes:

A. FACULTY OF HUMANITIES

All Humanities Ph.D Programmes require a minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5- point scale. In addition, to be found admissible, candidates must score a minimum of 60% in the admission interview.

1. COMPARATIVE LITERATURE PROGRAMME

  • M.A.

    Comparative Literature

  • Ph.D Comparative Literature

Requirements for MA Comparative Literature Programme:

Candidates must possess at least a Second Class Honours Degree (Lower Division) or its equivalent in Literature from a recognized University. Graduates in English have to produce evidence of a minimum of two years (four semesters) academic exposure to French or another language of International communication.

African Language

There is a Special African Language requirement for the Comparative Literature Programme. Any candidate who is deficient in speaking, reading or writing an African language will be required to take an appropriate course in the Department of Linguistics and Communication Studies and produce evidence of having passed that course.

Requirements for Ph.D Comparative Literature Programme:

Candidates must have an M.A. Degree in Literature or M.A. Degree in other related discipline in addition to the other Faculty Requirements.

2. DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE ARTS

Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), Master of Arts (MA), Master of Fine Arts (MFA) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D)

  • (i)

    Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Theatre & Media Arts

Admission Requirements for PGD Programme in Theatre & Media Arts

To qualify for admission into the Postgraduate Diploma programme, a candidate must obtain a first Degree in the disciplines within the Humanities or a first Degree from any other discipline.

  • (ii)

    Master of Arts (MA), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in the following areas:

    Dramatic Theory and Criticism

    Sociology of Drama

  • (c)

    Theatre and Cultural Administration

  • (d)

    Directing

  • (e)

    Theatre History

  • (f)

    Technical Theatre

  • (g)

    Playwriting

    Costume and Make-Up

  • (i)

    Theatre in Education

Requirements for M.A. Theatre Arts

Candidates must possess at least a Second Class Honours Degree (Lower Division) in Theatre Arts or its equivalent from a recognized University.

Requirements for Ph.D Theatre Arts

Candidates must have an M.A. Degree in Theatre Arts in addition to the other

Faculty Requirements.

Ph.D in Theatre and Media Arts

Requirement for Ph.D in Theatre and Media Arts

Candidates must obtain a first Degree in Theatre Arts. CGPA requirements and duration of programmes are as stated in item a – c above.

3. DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH STUDIES

  • (a)

    M.A., Ph.D in Literature with emphasis on:
    • (i)

      Theory of Literature

    • (ii)

      African Literature

    • (iii)

      African Oral Literature

  • (b)

    M.A., Ph.D in English Language with emphasis on:
    • (i)

      Applied English Linguistics

    • (ii)

      English as a Second Language (ESL)

    • (iii)

      Discourse Analysis/Pragmatics

    • (iv)

      Sociolinguistics

    • (v)

      Phonology

Requirements for M.A. English Studies

Candidates must possess at least a Second Class Honours Degree (Lower Division) or its equivalent in English Studies from a recognized University.

Requirements for Ph.D English Studies

Candidates must have an M.A. Degree in English Studies or related discipline with a CGPA of not less than 3.50 on a 5-points scale.

4. DEPARTMENT OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES

  • (i)

    Postgraduate Diploma in French (PGDF)

  • (ii)

    Postgraduate Diploma in Translation (PGDT)

  • (iii)

    M.A. French in the following areas:
    • (a)

      French Grammar and Linguistics

    • (b)

      African Literature in French

    • (c)

      French Literature

  • (iv)

    M.A. Translation (English/French)

  • (v)

    Ph.D French/Translation (English/French)

Requirements for M.A. Foreign Languages and Literatures

Candidates must possess at least a Second Class Honours Degree (Lower Division) or its equivalent in Foreign Languages and Literatures from a recognized University or PGD Upper Credit.

Requirements for Ph.D Foreign Languages and Literatures

Candidates must have an M.A. Degree in Foreign Languages and Literatures in addition to the other Faculty Requirements.

5. DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY AND DIPLOMATIC STUDIES

  • (i)

    Postgraduate Diploma in History & Diplomatic Studies (PGDHDS) Qualifications for Admission

  • To be eligible for admission into Postgraduate Diploma Programme in History and Diplomacy, a candidate must have a good honours Degree not less than Third Class and a CGPA of not less than 1.50 and above in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Education, Law and the Management Sciences.

  • (ii)

    Master of Arts (M.A.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in the following areas:

  • (a)

    Social & Political History

  • (b)

    Economic History

  • (c)

    Diplomatic & International Studies

Qualifications for Admission into the Masters Programme

To qualify for admission into the M.A Degree Programmes of the Department, candidates must possess at least a Second Class Honours Degree (Lower Division) or its equivalent of the University of Port Harcourt or from any other recognized University in the relevant subjects.

Except for Archaeology/Cultural Heritage Management, candidates from non-History backgrounds will be required to pass through the Department’s Postgraduate Diploma Programme in History and Diplomacy before admission into the MA programmes.

  • (iii)

    Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) programme

Qualifications for Admission into the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) Programme

To be eligible for admission into the Doctor of Philosophy programme in History and Diplomatic Studies, a candidate must have an MA/M.Sc Degree with a CGPA of 3.50 and above on a 5-point scale in History from any Nigerian University or abroad. Except for Archaeology, candidates from non-History backgrounds are expected to pass through the Department’s Postgraduate Diploma Programme in History and Diplomatic Studies to be admitted into Ph.D Degree programmes. In addition, candidates will be required to present a written proposal on a thesis topic in their chosen field and score a minimum of 60% in pre-admission oral interview.

Requirements for Postgraduate Diploma in Communication Studies:

To be eligible for admission into the programme, a candidate must have a good honours Degree in any field from any recognized University. Candidates with HND Upper Credit are also eligible for admission into the PGD Programme. Candidates with pass Degree will not be admitted.
Requirements for M.A. Linguistics & Communication Studies:
Candidates wishing to enroll in the Communication component must hold at least a Second Class Honours Degree (Lower Division) or a Lower Credit with a CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale in Postgraduate Diploma in Mass Communication, Communication Studies/Arts. Candidates wishing to enroll in the Linguistics component must possess the same qualifications in Linguistics or a subject with a strong linguistic component.
Requirements for Ph.D Linguistics & Communication Studies
Candidates wishing to enroll in the Communication component must hold at least a Master’s Degree with a CGPA of at least 3.50 on a 5-point scale  Mass Communication, Communication Studies/Arts. Candidates wishing to enroll in the Linguistics component must possess the same qualifications in Linguistics or a subject with a strong linguistic component.

O’Level Requirements
All candidates must possess O’Level credit passes in five relevant subjects including English Language and Mathematics.
Requirements for M.A. Philosophy
Candidates must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree with a Second Class Honours (Lower Division) or its equivalent in Philosophy (single honours) or combined honours Degree with Philosophy as a component.
Requirements for Ph.D Philosophy
Candidates must have a Master’s Degree in Philosophy with a CGPA of at least 3.50 or its equivalent in addition to the other faculty requirements.

8. DEPARTMENT OF RELIGIOUS AND CULTURAL STUDIES

Requirements for PGD in Religious and Cultural Studies:
Candidates must possess good honours Degree in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Education, Law, Management Sciences, and Science from the University of Port Harcourt or any other institution recognized by the Senate of the University of Port Harcourt.
Requirements for MA in Religious and Cultural Studies:
Admission to the MA programme will be open to candidates with the B.A. Degree in Religious and Cultural Studies, Islamic Studies, Theology or other related disciplines such as Philosophy, History, Sociology and Anthropology with a Second Class Honours Degree (Lower Division), from the University of Port Harcourt or any other institution recognized by the Senate of the University of Port Harcourt
Requirements for Ph.D Religious and Cultural Studies:
Candidates must have an M.A. Degree in Religious and Cultural Studies in addition to the other faculty requirements.

9. DEPARTMENT OF FINE ARTS & DESIGN

M.

A; Ph.D in Fine Arts & Design in the following areas:

African Art History

Design History

Painting

Ceramics Design

Graphics & Communication Design with Specialization in Advertising,

Printmaking, Animation & Photography.

Textiles & Fashion Design


O’Level Requirements
All candidates must possess a minimum of five O’Level Credit passes which must include English Language and Mathematics in addition to other faculty requirements.

10. DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC

(i)

Postgraduate Diploma in Music (PGDM)

(ii)

Master of Arts in Music

METHOD OF APPLICATION

Application Fee of Fifteen Thousand Naira (N15,000.00) should be paid online at any of the following Banks: U&C Microfinance Bank, UBA, Fidelity Bank, Access Bank, Eco Bank, First Bank and Sterling Bank.

It is mandatory for every candidate to pay the sum of Seven Thousand Naira (N7,000.00) for Prospectus in U&C Microfinance Bank Ltd, Choba with Account Number 1528000068.
