UNILORIN, Kwarapoly students remanded in prison for love scam

A 300 Level Student of the University of Ilorin, Ganiyy Rasaq Olarewaju, and Olakunle Adebisi, an ND II student of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin,  have been convicted by Justice Mahmood Abdulgafar of the Kwara State High Court sitting in Ilorin on Thursday, July 1.

The convicts were accused of a love scam by the Ilorin Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and arraigned on June 28, 2021, on one count separate charge, to which they pleaded guilty.

Two witnesses: Dagogo Urowayino and Shetima Yusuf, were called up against Olarewaju and Adebisi respectively, and they narrated how the culprits were arrested and presented several fraudulent messages printed from their emails.

Justice Abdulgafar while delivering judgment, pronounced them guilty and sentenced Adebisi to six months jail term, while Olarewaju bagged one month imprisonment, to be observed at Mandala Correctional Centre, Ilorin.

However, the judge allowed the suspension of the sentencing for the two convicts. According to the judge, Adebisi would commence serving his term after two years when he must have graduated from the Kwara State Polytechnic, while Olarewaju’s sentencing would commence after one year when he must have finished his studies in the University of Ilorin.

The sentence is without the option of a fine for the two convicts.
