UNILAG students claim 1st spot twice in a row in Zindi Umoja Hackathon

Students of the University of Lagos Artificial Intelligence (AI) Club have done the University proud once again by emerging winners of the second (2nd) edition of the Africa Inter-University Machine Learning Hackathon 2020, tagged UmojaHack.

The Hackathon, which was held virtually on Saturday, November 28, 2020, was organized by Zindi Africa and the results were expertly monitored in real-time. Zindi Africa is a data science competition platform with the mission of building the data science ecosystem in Africa.

The first edition took place earlier in 2020, where the University of Lagos students performed excellently among 72 other Universities that participated across Africa. 287 data scientists enrolled for the 2nd edition with the title, “UmojaHack Nigeria: AXA Vehicle Insurance Claim Challenge”, out of which about 204 participated in the challenge.

The University of Lagos, the defending champion in Nigeria, took a bold step yet again, to retain its position among other universities in the second edition of the hackathon and finished first place for the second time in the history of the Hackathon.

The UNILAG AI club participated in the competition from one of the laboratories at the University’s Centre for Information Technology and Systems (CITS), under the supervision of their staff adviser, Dr. Victor Odumuyiwa, who is also the Acting Director of CITS.

Hearty congratulations to the students of UNILAG AI Club. You have once again proven the stuff that Great Akokites are made of. Keep being creative, innovative and awesome
