The University of Lagos (UNILAG) was ranked 172 out of 606 universities from in the 2021 Times Higher Education (THE) Emerging Economies University Rankings. This is a notable elevation from the University falling within the ranking range of 201–250 last year.
The Times Higher Education (THE) Emerging Economies University Rankings 2020 includes only institutions in countries classified by the London Stock Exchange’s Financial Times Stock Exchange (FTSE) Group as “advanced emerging”, “secondary emerging” or “frontier”, of which UNILAG falls in the frontier category. This year, the ranking data was pulled from 606 universities from 48 countries and regions, 14% more than was ranked in 2020 (533).
The rankings used 13 performance indicators to judge institutions on their teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. These same indicators are used for THE World University Rankings but have been recalibrated to reflect the development priorities of universities in emerging economies.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe, FAS, appreciates members of staff, students, alumni and friends of the University for their various contributions to the achievement of this feat and charges everyone to continue contributing their quota to make the University of Lagos great.
