The Former head of state, General Yakubu Gowon at UNILAG’s 2012/2013 convocation ceremony held at the Multipurpose Hall of the university assured the students that the name of the institution will remain the same and that nobody can change it.
Gen. Gowon stressed that the university has continued to progress from strength to strength and urged the management of the institution to keep the flag flying.
Gowon who was the special guest of honour commended the management of the institution on their efforts in maintaining high standard and advised the graduating students to be good ambassadors of the institution and continue to improve themselves to the glory of God, their country, Nigeria and the university.
He also advised the graduands to set up business and not rely on white collar jobs.
Addressing male graduands specifically he said “I also want to admonish you young men here to brace up because women have taken over. As we can see here, majority of the prizes were won by ladies; so I want to urge you to walk shoulder to shoulder with them so that you won’t be left behind,” he said.
The university’s vice chancellor, Professor Rahamon
Bello in his remark explained that the institution has continued to relate well with other top universities worldwide, adding that in the last three years, it has hosted three top universities from South Africa, University of Witwatersrand, University of Cape Town and University of Johannesburg.
According to him, the University of Lagos being one of the pioneer members of the newly formed 15-member Consortium of African Research Universities and that an innovation office is already operational in the institution and is designed to assist in furthering research grant acquisitions in various disciplines.
