The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi has wielded her big stick as she suspended two students of the institution from studies for flouting University laws.
The notice of suspension conveyed in separate letters dated February 21, 2024, and signed by the University Registrar, Mr. Gabriel Egbe indicates that one Otu Ime Monday in the Department of Library Science, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Education, has been suspended from studies with effect from 2023/2024 session.
According to the letter, the aforementioned student was suspended by the Vice Chancellor for flouting Management's directive banning the position of "Class Representativeā.
In a report sent to the Vice Chancellor, as conveyed by the letter, the culprit was alleged to have sent text messages on WhatsApp inviting students to a drinking joint in town, for "induction into Class Rep Forum of National Association of Library Science Students(NALISS) department.
The letter also stated that the venue of the meeting was slated for Eta-Agbor Layout Overhead Tank by 4 pm on the 8th of February,2024, adding that the invitees were asked to come along with a bottle of Gordon Dry gin, a bottle of groundnut and a foundation levy of two thousand naira.
Consequent upon this, the Vice Chancellor and the Constituted Authorities hereby approved the suspension of Otu Ime Monday from studies.
In the same vein, Prosper Ndubueze of the Faculty of Pharmacy was also suspended from studies for assaulting Faith Chinedu, a female student of the University, thereby causing bodily harm to her.
The act of lawlessness, according to the suspension letter, is not acceptable in the University as it contravenes the Students' code of conduct contained in the Students' Handbook.
The said Prosper Ndubueze, as contained in the letter, was also suspended from studies with effect from the 2023/2024 academic session.
The Dean Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Education and Head of the Department of Library Science, the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, as well as, the acting Chief Security Officer according to the letter, are to ensure full compliance with this directive.
This is even as the suspended students are asked to stay away from campus unless when invited by the Students Disciplinary Committee which has been mandated to investigate the matter.
