"A student of the University of Benin has been denied graduation for three years despite meeting all requirements to do so.
26-year-old Temidayo Awoyemi, was reportedly told that the school officials have been too busy to compile his records, leaving him stranded for three years after completing his studies.
According to PremiumTimes, the graduate of the varsity's department of Chemistry was told by the department and faculty that they have had no time to process his records for the last two years.
It was confirmed by the faculty checker, Professor Anthony Imiavan, in charge of scrutinizing students’ records, confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES that the student had no case to keep him from graduating.
A spokesperson for the school admitted to PremiumTimes that the situation was 'strange,' while assuring that the issue will be resolved quickly. However, a month after his promise was made, Awoyemi is still yet to graduate.
Awoyemi explained that this struggle began in his final year. He was told that his West African Senior Secondary School Certificate.
He was eventually able to provide a copy of the missing certificate during the 2013/2014 after a six-month strike by Academic Staff Union of Universities prevented him from doing so in the 2012/13 school session.
Since then, the officials in charge have refused to attend to his case.
Awoyemi explains, "even after the course adviser claimed that he had done his own aspects of the work, the faculty checker, Prof. Imiavan, especially, has refused to check my results for years now for whatever reasons I don’t know,” Temidayo said.
“From my understanding, the department has no problem with my result. I don’t have any criminal record. But I don’t know why the officials have refused to process my result.”
Michael Osasuyi, the university's spokesperson promised that the matter was being looked into by the Vice Chancellor.
“The various authorities that are concerned with this matter are now working on it. Once the vice chancellor gets a report on it, you will be able to get a feedback,” Mr. Osasuyi promised more than a month ago.
According to the PremiumTimes correspondent who investigated this story, he was ordered by Mr. Okuo, the HOD, to cease looking into the case and the school is yet to make a statement since."
