It came as a great shocker when Uniben was announced the Best University in Nigeria and 22nd in Africa. While some students of the school applauded the management for meeting such standards, other students simply tagged it as IMPOSSIBLE. Well according to Webometrics, this is true.
Webometrics is an organization that ranks universities based on the size, content and publications, global performance and visibility of THEIR WEBSITE. They believe that if a University or Institution has a strong web presence, then it should directly affect general performance of such institutions.
According to them, their rankings are not based on number of visits or page design but "It should also reach much larger potential audiences, offering access to scientific knowledge to researchers and institutions located in developing countries and also to third parties (economic, industrial, political or cultural stakeholders) in their own community"
Webometrics clearly states that even though their rankings correlates with quality of education and academic prestige, aspiring student should use additional criteria when choosing a university.
The bottom line is that since the rankings are based on the strength of Web Presence, amount and quality of information obtained on the institution's website, it can not be the ultimate tool to grading Standards or quality of Universities in Nigeria.
