UNIABUJA Governing Council Postpones Appointment Of New VC for Security Reasons

Controversial security reports on some of the leading candidates contesting for the post of Vice chancellor, coupled with late submission on other contenders have forced the governing council of the University of Abuja to postpone till Monday next week, the decision on who will eventually succeed the incumbent Professor James Adelabu.

A senior lecturer and member of the university senate who pleaded anonymity revealed that security reports on two out of the three shortlisted candidates were not too favourable, forcing the university council to call up more names from the reserve list.

The source also disclosed that the Registrar, Alhaji Muhammad Bello Modibbo  has been sent on compulsory leave by the governing council following the expiration of his tenure.

It also claimed that his alleged attempt to meddle into the appointment of a new vice chancellor by openly backing one of the candidates might have been responsible for the sudden decision by the council though his tenure in office has long expired.

It would be recalled that academic activities in the university had remained suspended since the middle of June, when a peaceful demonstration organised by the students turned violent leading to the closure of the institution indefinitely.

Meanwhile the two major unions in the campus namely: Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), have denied media reports that they were backing any of the candidates for the post of vice Chancellor. In two separate interviews, the Chairman of SSANU, Comrade Jude Nwabueze and that of ASUU, Dr Ben Ugheoke, jointly maintained that their respective unions remained neutral and would work with whoever emerged through transparent and merit based selection process.

The university is bracing up for a new helmsman that will turn around its fortunes following the controversial reign of Professor James Adelabu. (Leadership)
