The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) of the University of Ibadan have announced that the University Senate has no right to deliberate on union matters or discipline members.
This is coming after the senate members had threatened to punish SSANU and NASU members who participated in a protest against the ongoing Vice-Chancellor selection process last Wednesday.
SSANU Chairman, Mr Wale Akinremi who spoke on behalf of the two unions at a press conference held at the university, stated that the role of the University Senate is purely academic and that the union has a say on the selection process of the institution's next VC.
He further termed those who made the threat ‘mentally idle individuals’, adding that the Senate emergency meeting held on Wednesday was not a true representation of the UI Senate.
