Over 700 students from Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS) have filed a petition with the Sokoto zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), calling for an investigation into the Special Adviser on Students’ Matters to the state governor, Abubakar Muhammad Salame. The students allege that Salame failed to fulfill the commitment to cover their tuition fees and suspect that he may have misappropriated funds earmarked for this purpose.
The students, who are indigenes of Sokoto State, also appealed to Governor Ahmed Aliyu to intervene and support their education by facilitating the payment of their fees.
According to the group’s representative, Usman Yahuza, the state had initially approved tuition payments for 5,994 students, with 5,290 registrations completed, leaving a gap for 704 students still unpaid. Yahuza noted that while some students managed to continue their studies with temporary IDs, others had to defer or even withdraw due to their inability to meet the financial requirements.
In response to the allegations, Salame stated he would address the matter at the appropriate time.
