TWAS, in association with UNESCO and an array of centres of excellence situated in the South, has heralded the advent of its TWAS-UNESCO Associateship Scheme for 2023. This initiative was created with a clear purpose: to fortify research connections across the global South, by facilitating regular visits by proficient researchers to these renowned centres of excellence.
A Brief Historical Overview
In 1994, witnessing the rising tide of the ‘brain drain’ phenomenon that beleaguered numerous developing nations, TWAS and UNESCO collaboratively established an Associateship Scheme. Their vision was clear: empower researchers from developing countries with the opportunity to visit and collaborate with premier institutions in the South. As of now, nearly 300 prominent centres of excellence have actively pledged their commitment to this innovative programme.
Benefits of the Associateship
- Travel Expenses: The Associateship ensures the coverage of the associate’s travel outlays.
- Monthly Allowance: An additional USD $300 is provided monthly, to cater to miscellaneous local expenses.
- Facilities by the Host Centre: This includes accommodation, nourishment, and, crucially, the provision of research amenities.
Who is Eligible?
Eligibility is a cornerstone for the programme, ensuring it reaches those best poised to benefit:
- Academic Excellence: Prospective associates must possess a PhD or an equivalent academic credential.
- Meritocratic Selection: The programme prides itself on a rigorous selection process, wherein appointments hinge on sheer merit.
- Prioritisation of Isolated Institutions: Special priority is extended to scientists stemming from remote and isolated academic institutions within developing nations.
- Empowering Women in Science: Female scientists receive particular encouragement to apply, underscoring the programme’s commitment to gender inclusivity.
