Only Technology can Drive Intervention in Nigeria’s Education Problems – Experts

Mr Gossy Ukanwoke, Founder, Beni American University and Student Circle, on Tuesday in Abuja said only the use of technology could successfully drive the intervention in Nigeria’s education problems.

Ukanwoke stated this in his presentation titled “The Possibilities Provided by Technology in The Education Landscape: Change, Transformation and Structure’’ at the ongoing Nigerian Economic Summit.

He said information and communication technology (ICT) as well as knowledge and innovation, are driving forces in economic growth, social development and job creation.

Ukanwoke said the use of technology would enhance knowledge transfer by converting tacit knowledge to explicit knowledge, saying this was what the Nigerian education sector needed.

“Although formal education is a critical part of a nation’s development, knowledge transfer in all its forms is its cornerstone,” he said.

Ukanwoke said the use of ICT would also reduce the amount of investment needed in the country’s education sector and provide equality in gender access to education.

He also said the use of ICT would serve as a gateway to harness unlimited resources, bringing about a balanced knowledge for students at both the secondary and tertiary levels.

The Resource Person said technology could be developed through the setting of standards by government, as well as capacity building.

In his contribution, the Director of ICT, Osun State, Mr Bambo Bashorun, said education was on the highway and needed the use of ICT which is its vehicle.

“Technology is the easiest way to bring education closer to the people, as well as enhance students’ performance in the classroom.

“The use of ICT can put students ahead of their teachers and classroom by exploring new areas yet to be covered by the teacher,’’ he said.

On her part, Ms Megan Evans, International Ambassador, Udemy Inc., said there was the need for teachers to be super heroes by knowing the importance of technology in teaching and learning.

“It is not about having technology for technology sake, there must be the understanding of the content and the effective use of such technology,” she said.

Gbenga Sesan, Founder, Paradigm Initiative Nigeria (PIN) and Ajegunle.org, stated that ICT was not a complex technology to acquire, saying it was the simplest technology for effective learning. (NAN)
