An ND 1 student of the Federal Polytechnic Bauchi, Peace Everest, has been identified as one of the 17 victims killed in a terrorist attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen in the Southern Kaduna Local Government area, Kaduna State.
The Department of Laboratory Technology student had traveled home due to the 2023 general elections and was killed after the herdsmen attacked four communities; Unguwar Wakili, Mabuhu, Ungwan Juju, and Zangon Urban, on Saturday night, March 11, 2023.
According to reports, the locals and the herdsmen had a conflict about the poisoning of cows and the destruction of farm produce. This degenerated into the alleged murder of a Fulani herder in the community, in apparent retaliation for the killing of one of the locals last month.
The herdsmen were said to have mobilized and launched an attack on the communities killing no fewer than 17 people with several others sustaining life-threatening injuries.
The council chairman of Zango Kataf Local Government, Mr. Francis Sani Zimbo, condemned the barbaric attack and assured the affected community that investigations are underway to unravel the perpetrators and bring them to book. He, however, wondered why all the Mobile Police checkpoints within the affected communities were withdrawn before the attack.
