SUBEB Tasks Management Committees On School Monitoring

The Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board, on Wednesday, urged the School Based Management Committees to constantly monitor their various schools to ensure quality education delivery.

The Chairman of the board, Alhaji Abdulahi Dabo, made the call when SBMC of Maiturare Junior Secondary School, led by its Chairman, Mallam Ibrahim Baraya, visited the board’s office in Bauchi.

Dabo explained that one of the major objectives of setting up the committees was to involve them in the management of schools located in their various communities.

He said the committees would monitor the attitude of teachers in the schools to ensure quality service delivery.

He said, “Supervise the schools to ensure that teachers perform their duty accordingly because they are not working for free.

“Report to us any teacher you find not qualified or lack the attitude to deliver sound education to the students and we will take proper action.”

The chairman stressed that the state government was making effort to rid public schools of unqualified teachers because they were not adding value to the education sector.

He said the state government had, from 2007 to 2011, increased teachers’ salary six times, to motivate them through improved welfare package.

He said in spite of that, there was no sign of improvement from the quality of teaching in the state’s public schools, as many students could not read after graduation.

“As from 2007, our teachers’ salary is costing the government N200m; but by September 2011, the salary had risen to N1.2bn.

He added, “Yet there was no justification for such huge expenditure, if a JSS three student cannot read.”

Baraya said the visit was to thank the board and the state government for renovating and equipping the school with modern facilities.

He said the SBMC had supported the school with a set of computers and a generator, to complement government’s efforts at realizing quality education.

According to him, the measure is to enable the school to be part of the current technologically-driven world.

He added that the committee was also planning to support the school with chairs for six class rooms at N250,000.
