Student Expelled From Covenant University (cu) Drags the Institution to Court

A former student of Covenant University Ota Ogun state has sued the institution challenging his illegal expulsion for allegedly watching indecent and secular music on his laptop.

The student(names withheld)in his 24th paragraph affidavit to support his claim stated that before his expulsion, his parents had spent nothing less than 10million on his school fees and other expenses. He was a 400level; student of communication technology reportedly expelled on 23rd of November 2012 following a night raid by the student affairs of the institution. This was followed by his appearance before the schools disciplinary panel which recommended his expulsion.

Reports from the his hearing yesterday says that the prosecuting council Segun Fatoki told the court that the student was unduly expelled without a fair hearing in accordance with the constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999. He also claimed that his expulsion was a violation of section 44 of chapter 4 of the schools handbook.

However, the school in it's counter affidavit from the school handbook states that a student of the institution is not allowed to be in possession of any unholy material in the form of pictures ,musics or videos.

Also the school claimed is an offense punishable by expulsion if a student is caught with any indecent material.

After listening to both parties Justice Mobolaji Ojo of Ogun State high court said they should allow every individual to grow in life, and they need to live adding that if at age 15 to 17 they don't live that life, they will do it at age 30 to 35 because of too much rules. A youth must live like a youth and an adolescent must live like an adolescent. If all the traits of a youth are not exhibited at the right time it will be made manifest at the wrong time he said.
